Our department hosts a two-year fellowship here at the Washington
Cancer Institute of Washington Hospital Center and the Lombardi
Cancer Center, Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC. All
fellows are appointed as a Consultant to the Surgery Branch and
the Pediatric Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute,
N.I.H., Bethesda, Maryland. All fellows also rotate through the
Bone Branch of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP).
This
program is designed for an individual interested in pursuing an
academic career. There is emphasis on the entire spectrum of orthopaedic
oncology--adult and pediatric bone and soft tissue tumors, both
benign and malignant. This program has a strong commitment to a
multidisciplinary approach to treatment, which involves skeletal
radiologists, surgical pathologists, interventional radiologists,
adult and pediatric oncologists and reconstructive plastic surgeons.
There is an extensive computerized database of over 3000 operative
procedures along with digital images and videos of radiographic
studies, pathology and surgeries which forms the basis of the Orthopedic
Oncology Study Center.
Approximately
300 major operative oncology procedures are performed a year and
about 2800 outpatients are seen. The fellow is involved with all
aspects of patient management and surgery. Surgical skills are strongly
emphasized and developed. Special emphasis is placed upon the use
of segmental (modular) endoprosthesis for reconstruction of large
segmental defects of the upper and lower extremities, including
the scapula and pelvis. There is a strong emphasis upon limb-sparing
surgery for both bone and soft tissue sarcomas. There are multiple
on-going projects involving molecular biology, animal studies, clinical
research and an active gait-computer analysis laboratory at the
National Rehabilitation Hospital. All fellows are expected to participate
in several research projects, contribute to resident teaching conferences,
and develop computer skills in database management, graphics, digital
photography, statistics and word processing. The fellowship is flexible
as to adapt to the fellow’s special surgical and research
interests.
